I self-host because I like to host everything on my own servers, behind my firewall. It seems most people recommend installing Netbird on a public VPS. Why? Can the Netbird server be installed and work properly if it’s installed locally behind a firewall that has WAF and IPS?
Also, can other services and Docker containers (wiki, email server, web server) be installed on the Netbird server and have Netbird act as the reverse-proxy for local services?

Yes. This is exactly what I do, run on my own metal, behind my firewall, because I like to run all I can myself, and for good reason. I use it for VPN remote access from my mobile workstation, and am currently using (semi tentatively) the Reverse Proxy to expose public services.

I am pretty sure this is possible. In terms of “local” services, I use NB to act as the reverse proxy for other services on the LAN, e.g the webservers run on separate VMs, but accessed via NB.
I think its possible to run them on the same host via Docker too, but I prefer the isolation of VMs.
yup nebird is just another group of docker containers, can run alongside other containers, mine runs on a oracle instance vps with a dozen or so other containers (from unifi to dockhand to beszel) all which can be made available through netbird proxy, it is its’s purpose to do this
